Move Over, TikTok: Alaska Mom Clinches Mouth Gape Record

An Alaskan delivery service owner has dethroned a TikTok star to claim the world record for the largest female mouth gape, with an astounding measurement of 2.98 inches. Marie Pearl Zellmer Robinson of Ketchikan received official confirmation from Guinness World Records on April 9 that her jaw-dropping ability had surpassed the previous record by nearly half an inch.

“I don’t look like I have anything unusual with my face at all,” Robinson explained after claiming the title. “I kind of seem to have a short jaw. But when I start opening it, things change pretty fast.” Her record-breaking mouth opening allows her to fit objects as large as a baseball, a 10-patty burger, or five Jenga blocks simultaneously between her jaws, according to People.

The achievement demolishes the previous record of 2.56 inches set in 2021 by social media personality Samantha Ramsdell, whose distinctive mouth gape had earned her millions of followers across various platforms. Unlike her predecessor who built a digital empire around her unusual ability, Robinson discovered her record-breaking potential almost by accident.

Dollar Bill Test Reveals World-Class Potential

Robinson’s path to the record books began when she encountered videos of the previous record holder online and wondered if she might be competitive. “I saw that there was a new record created for women to have the tallest mouth, and when I looked at it, I realized, well, maybe I could beat that,” she recalled.

To check her potential, Robinson first measured herself against a U.S. dollar bill, which stands approximately 2.5 inches tall—roughly equivalent to the previous record. “It totally fit in my mouth,” she said, realizing she might have a chance at claiming the title.

For official verification, Robinson visited her local dentist in Ketchikan, who used precision steel calipers to document her maximum mouth opening at 7.62 centimeters (2.98 inches). This measurement comfortably exceeded the previous record of 6.52 centimeters, as reported by Alaska Public.

Anatomical Anomaly Rather Than Practiced Skill

Unlike many world records that require training, conditioning, or practice, Robinson’s achievement stems from a unique anatomical configuration. “I’m pretty sure what happened is my jaw is just positioned in such a way that it’s just slightly further back,” she explained. “I can feel my jaw in my ear canal, which most people apparently don’t.”

This unusual jaw structure allows Robinson to achieve a vertical mouth opening significantly greater than what most humans can physically attain. Despite this remarkable ability, she maintains a completely normal appearance when her mouth is closed—the extraordinary difference only becomes apparent when she demonstrates her maximum opening.

Robinson believes her ability isn’t familial, noting she hasn’t observed similar traits in relatives. “I don’t think the skill runs in the family, but it still may be genetic,” she said, suggesting her distinctive jaw configuration is likely an individual anatomical variance rather than an inherited trait.

Persistent Pursuit Through Stringent Verification

Obtaining official recognition from Guinness World Records proved more challenging than simply having an unusual ability. “According to Robinson, there’s a very strict verification process,” reported UPI. Her first application over a year ago was rejected due to insufficient documentation—the witness statements and filming didn’t meet Guinness’s exacting standards.

Undeterred, Robinson made a second attempt with her husband recording while local dentist David Albertson performed careful measurements. Interestingly, she discovered her mouth gape had increased by a few millimeters between attempts, which she attributes to “practice” during the interim period.

The successful verification represents a dream fulfilled for Robinson, who has long aspired to join the ranks of record holders. “Every time I see somebody do something amazing, I’m like, ‘Well, I can’t do that,'” she said. “But this one was one that I could do, and I surprised myself even.”

From Childhood Novelty to Global Recognition

Robinson’s unusual ability first emerged in childhood as entertainment among siblings. “I used to, as a child, shove large objects in my mouth for fun,” she recalled. “When you have siblings you tend to stick stuff in your mouth, to show off.”

As an adult, Robinson rarely demonstrates her extraordinary mouth capacity. “When I do, it kind of creeps people out,” she admitted to UPI. “That’s a creepy jaw!” This hesitation makes her world record achievement all the more remarkable—a rarely displayed trait that has now earned international recognition.

Outside her record-breaking jaw, Robinson is known locally as co-founder of Ketch-A-Courier, a delivery service whose vehicles featuring distinctive halibut logos are familiar sights around Ketchikan. This combination of entrepreneurial success and world record achievement has earned her a unique place in her community’s history.

Record May Fall Again—To Its Current Holder

While Robinson now officially holds the world title, she believes her record may not stand for long—and she may be the one to break it. “I welcome the challenge of someone else going after it, and I’m pretty sure I can beat my own record in the future as well,” she stated, suggesting her current measurement may not represent her maximum potential.

For perspective, the male record in this category stands significantly higher. Minnesota’s Isaac Johnson holds the title for largest male mouth gape at an astounding 4.014 inches (10.196 centimeters), demonstrating the anatomical differences between male and female jaw structures.

Robinson’s achievement now places her in Ketchikan’s growing record legacy. The town previously held the world record for “largest rainboot race” in 2013 when nearly 2,000 local residents participated, a title they held until being surpassed by an Irish athletic club. Robinson had hoped to join that attempt but couldn’t get time off work—making her current record a form of redemption and community contribution.
