April Arts Explosion: Central Jersey’s Cultural Calendar Heats Up
Central New Jersey is experiencing a surge of artistic and cultural events this April, with a diverse lineup of performances, workshops, and creative gatherings scheduled throughout the region. Local arts organizations and venues are collaborating to create an unusually rich calendar of events, showcasing everything from musical performances and film screenings to creative marketplaces and wellness experiences, according to WBJB’s community calendar.
The cultural renaissance is being amplified by Brookdale Public Radio (90.5 The Night), which has emerged as a central hub for promoting and supporting local arts initiatives. The station not only broadcasts information about upcoming events but also directly sponsors several significant cultural programs throughout the year.
“We’re seeing unprecedented enthusiasm for local arts events this spring,” said Jeff Raspe, a staff member at WBJB-FM. “After several challenging years for the creative community, there’s a palpable hunger for authentic, in-person cultural experiences that bring people together.”

Music’s Living Room: Open Mics Cultivate Community
Belmar Arts Center has established itself as a cornerstone of the local music scene with its popular weekly open mic and music workshop held every Tuesday evening. Unlike traditional open mics focused solely on performance, this collaborative environment encourages artistic growth and experimentation.
“If you wish to share an original of yours, awesome. If you want to play a cover, great. You may want to just share an idea with a band to see what it sounds like,” explains the event description. “This open mic is designed for collaborators and experimentalists alike, to try new things, and be open to different possibilities.”
Hosted by multi-instrumentalist Andy Demos and singer-songwriter Alex Sanders, the sessions have been running for over three years and have cultivated a supportive community of musicians at various stages of their creative journeys. Sign-ups begin at 7 p.m., with a $5 donation requested from non-members (free for BAC members).

Cinematic Revival: Classic Films Return to Big Screen
Film enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as classic cinema returns to traditional projection formats. On April 17, the Union County Performing Arts Center (UCPAC) will screen Francis Ford Coppola’s landmark 1972 film “The Godfather” in authentic 35mm format, offering viewers an opportunity to experience the masterpiece as originally intended.
The screening goes beyond mere movie watching, transforming into a complete experiential event with themed drinks, photo opportunities, and special surprises that organizers promise “you can’t (and won’t want to) refuse.” This revival of traditional film projection represents a growing trend of cinematic preservation and appreciation in the region.
The screening highlights the renewed interest in communal movie-watching experiences, contrasting with the isolation of streaming services. By presenting “The Godfather” – which the American Film Institute selected as the second-greatest film in American cinema – in its original format, UCPAC is bridging generations of film lovers.
Musical Craftsmanship: From Tributes to Originals
The region’s musical offerings span from innovative tributes to established artists to showcases of original talent. Beginning April 19, Belmar Arts will launch a monthly concert series pairing “tunes from legendary masters of rock, along with some unsung heroes following in their footsteps.” The inaugural show will highlight the music of Tom Petty alongside selections from contemporary band Dawes.
For those seeking more original compositions, the Daniel Keiser Band will perform at the Lizzie Rose Music Room on April 19. This fingerstyle guitar-led ensemble, which combines classical, bluegrass, and rock influences, was recently selected to open for 14-time Grammy winner Dan Tyminski from the Alison Krauss Band at Stockton University.
The band’s unique configuration – featuring violin, mandolin, piano, and distinctive “box drummer” percussion – creates what organizers describe as a “distinctive, melodic sound that is worth checking out.” This performance represents the vibrant original music scene developing in the region.
Creative Economy: Tools of the Trade
The BAC Swap Meet on April 26 addresses a practical need in the creative community by providing a marketplace specifically for artistic tools and supplies rather than finished works. This innovative event allows artists to find affordable equipment while connecting with fellow creators.
“DISCOVER INCREDIBLE DEALS ON CREATIVE TOOLS!” announces the event listing, promising photography gear, art supplies, jewelry-making materials, and craft equipment. With early bird access available for a $15 tax-deductible donation and general admission at $5, the swap meet represents an economical approach to artistic resource sharing.
The focus on tools rather than finished art creates a distinctive niche in the creative marketplace. “NO artwork or finished pieces will be for sale—this event is all about gear, tools equipment and supplies for making your own artwork, photographs and creations!” the organizers emphasize, highlighting the event’s focus on enabling future creativity rather than consuming past works.

Wellness Meets Creativity: Holistic Cultural Approaches
The calendar also reflects growing interest in events that blend wellness practices with creative and social experiences. “It’s a Vibe,” scheduled for April 17 at Porta Asbury Park, exemplifies this trend with its combination of movement, community connection, and sensory experiences.
Described as “a space where wellness meets community, and self-care feels effortless,” the event integrates Pilates, yoga, and sound bath experiences with creative vendor displays and refreshments. This holistic approach reflects shifting attitudes toward wellness as a communal rather than solely individual practice.
Meanwhile, philanthropy blends with cultural celebration at “Center a La Carte” on April 24, a fundraiser supporting The Center in Asbury Park, which serves at-risk community members. The themed event combines culinary experiences from twenty-four local restaurants with music, raffles, and auctions.
As Central Jersey’s cultural calendar continues to diversify, these April events demonstrate the region’s evolution into a significant creative hub. With Brookdale Public Radio helping to amplify these offerings through its community calendar and promotional support, local residents have unprecedented access to artistic experiences across multiple disciplines.
