Atlanta’s Penelope Road Brings Funk-Soul Fusion to Wonder Bar
Rising Atlanta-based band Penelope Road will bring their self-described “stanky funky junk” sound to Asbury Park’s iconic Wonder Bar on June 22, 2025, as part of the Prudential North to Shore Festival. The five-piece ensemble, known for blending ’70s rock, funk, and soul influences, will headline a dynamic evening of live music starting at 6:00 PM, according to North to Shore Festival organizers.
Two supporting acts will join the bill: opening duo the dt’s, who seamlessly shift between rock, blues, and power pop styles, and the Mike Montrey Band, known for their fiery Americana sound and compelling storytelling approach to songwriting.

Atlanta Sound Meets Jersey Shore Stage
Formed in late 2022, Penelope Road features Max Moore (lead vocals, guitar), Charles Eastman (lead vocals, keys), Koan Roy-Meighoo (guitar), James Kopp (bass), and Anthony Smith (drums). The band’s name originates from the Atlanta street where the original members lived during their formative years, according to an interview with WUOG 90.5fm.
The group’s sound draws inspiration from soul legends like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder while incorporating contemporary influences such as Paramore and Goose. This fusion has established them as an emerging force in Atlanta’s vibrant music scene, with performances at venues including The Masquerade, Smith’s Olde Bar, and several regional festivals.
“Penelope Road is the college band you want to grow old with,” notes The Southern Cafe & Music Hall, highlighting the group’s appeal that transcends typical expectations for emerging artists. Their high-energy performances have become their trademark, creating immersive musical experiences rather than simply delivering songs.
Supporting Acts Add Diverse Musical Styles
The evening will open with the dt’s, a duo who developed their sound through home studio collaborations. Though relatively new to the scene, the pair brings versatility to their performances, seamlessly transitioning between various musical styles while maintaining a cohesive sound that complements the headliner’s energy.
Following the dt’s, the Mike Montrey Band will take the stage with their distinctive blend of Americana, soul, and rock ‘n’ roll. Led by singer-songwriter Mike Montrey, the group has earned praise for their soulful harmonies and storytelling approach to songwriting. According to New Jersey Stage, their music delivers “heartwarming, spine-rattling” performances that connect deeply with audiences.
The band’s most recent album, “Searching For My Soul,” showcases their evolution as artists and their ability to craft compelling narratives within their musical compositions. Their addition to the lineup brings a local New Jersey connection to the evening’s performances.
