Essex County Honors Irvington HS Basketball Champions
The Essex County Board of Commissioners celebrated the achievements of Irvington High School’s freshman boys basketball team during their 21st annual “Essex County Celebrates Youth” event on April 23. The team, which captured the Essex County Freshman Tournament championship in February with a 65-55 victory over Newark Collegiate Academy, was recognized alongside other outstanding young people from across the county for their dedication to academics, athletics, and community service.
The recognition event, held at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Justice Building in Newark, showcased the team’s accomplishment as part of the county’s ongoing efforts to acknowledge and encourage exceptional youth achievement, according to Patch.

Championship Victory Highlights Team’s Talent
The Irvington High School Freshman Boys Basketball Team earned their championship title on February 22 at Bloomfield High School, where they demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork. The victory came after a competitive tournament that culminated in their decisive win against Newark Collegiate Academy.
“These young athletes showed tremendous dedication throughout their season,” said Commissioner A’Dorian Murray-Thomas, who presented the team’s recognition. “Their championship victory wasn’t just about athletic prowess—it represented months of hard work, discipline, and commitment to their goals.”
Standout performances from team members Christian St. Claire, Joshua Anderson, Jordan Goodridge, Elijah Barton, Alsamir Payne, Chris Sylvain, and Nolen Lyle were particularly instrumental in securing the championship win, according to county officials.
Coaching Philosophy Emphasizes Life Skills
Under the leadership of Head Coach Nhemie Theodore, now in his seventh season, and Assistant Coach Matthew Anthony, the team has developed a philosophy that extends well beyond basketball fundamentals. Coach Theodore’s approach focuses on preparing students for life beyond athletics, emphasizing values that will serve them throughout their personal and professional journeys.
“Coach Theodore has built a program that instills perseverance, accountability, and work ethic in these young men,” explained Essex County Athletic Director James Martinez. “These are values that translate into success in all areas of life, not just on the basketball court.”
This holistic approach to coaching has become increasingly important in youth sports, as educators and parents recognize the potential for athletics to teach crucial life skills and character development.
Team Roster Showcases Young Talent
The championship team’s full roster includes Chris Sylvain, Jordan Goodridge, Elijah Barton, Jayden Edwards, Jayden Anderson, Josh Anderson, Nolen Lyle, Jabron Johnson, Al-Samir Payne, Christian St. Claire, Quanel Brown, Zavonta Williams, Paul Dorcelian, and Marvin Jean. Many of these players are expected to continue their basketball careers at the junior varsity and varsity levels in coming years.
“What makes this achievement particularly special is that it suggests a bright future for Irvington basketball,” noted local sports analyst Terrence Williams. “When you see this level of talent and teamwork at the freshman level, it often translates to continued success as these players mature and develop.”
The recognition from the Essex County Commissioners provides additional motivation for these student-athletes as they continue their academic and athletic journeys through high school.
Broader Youth Recognition Program
The basketball team’s recognition was part of a broader ceremony that included several other outstanding young people from across Essex County. Fellow awardees included Reynamia Soto of Newark, and Sahli Negassi and Kyley Gary-Grayson of West Orange, each recognized for their own notable achievements.
“Tonight, we stand in proud support of our honorees who have done so much already at such a young age,” Commissioner President Carlos Pomares said during the event. “Their hard work and dedication to lifting up those around them give all of us hope for the future.”
The annual “Essex County Celebrates Youth” event has become an important tradition in the county, providing public recognition for young people who demonstrate excellence and commitment in various fields.

Congressional Recognition Enhances Honor
Adding to the significance of the recognition, U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) provided official certificates of accomplishment for all honorees, including each member of the Irvington basketball team. This congressional acknowledgment elevates the recognition to the national level, underlining the importance of celebrating youth achievement.
“When we recognize our young people, they know they have achieved something real, and that we believe in and are invested in them,” Pomares emphasized during the ceremony. “Congratulations to all our honorees!”
The event highlighted the commitment of Essex County leadership to support and celebrate the accomplishments of young people across the county, creating a culture that values academic, athletic, and community service excellence among its youth.
