Free Family History Day Returns to East Jersey
Middlesex County’s annual History Day celebration returns to East Jersey Old Town Village in Piscataway on May 17, offering families a free, immersive journey into the region’s rich historical past.
The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature historical reenactments, hands-on activities, and interactive performances designed to bring the 18th and 19th centuries to life for visitors of all ages.

Historic Village Showcases Early American Life
East Jersey Old Town Village serves as the perfect backdrop for this educational event, featuring a collection of historic structures from the 1700s and 1800s that were relocated to the site within Johnson Park, according to Middlesex County’s official website.
These preserved buildings represent different architectural styles found throughout the Raritan Valley and provide visitors with an authentic glimpse into life during America’s formative years. Attendees can explore a historic tavern, one-room schoolhouse, church, blacksmith shop, and numerous other period structures staffed by costumed interpreters.
Entertaining Educational Activities Planned
This year’s History Day will feature several special activities, including live reenactments of the historic first collegiate football game between Rutgers University and Princeton University, according to Patch.
Visitors can also participate in traditional crafts demonstrations, witness historical trades in action, and engage with interpreters who bring the daily lives of early Americans into focus. Special programming for children will ensure the event appeals to the youngest history enthusiasts as well.
Free Transportation Between Historic Sites
Adding to the accessibility of the event, Middlesex County will provide complimentary transportation between related historical sites via its RIDE shuttle service. This will allow visitors to also explore the Cornelius Low House Museum and Metlar-Bodine House Museum during their visit without worrying about transportation.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for families to step back in time and experience history firsthand,” said a representative from the Middlesex County Division of History and Historic Preservation. “The village really comes alive during History Day, with authentic sounds, smells, and activities that make learning about our past engaging and memorable.”

Cultural Heritage Preservation
The history of East Jersey Old Town Village itself reflects a commitment to preserving cultural heritage. According to historical records, the village’s founder, Dr. Joseph Kler, and a group of local residents saved most of the buildings from demolition and transported them to the current site, where they were reassembled and restored to reflect their original appearance.
Today, the village serves as both an educational resource and a reminder of the importance of historic preservation, offering year-round programming with historical interpreters available on-site from April through October.
