Young People Drive New Jersey’s Innovative Recovery Movement
New Jersey’s youth recovery movement is gaining momentum with the launch of the state’s first Young People in Recovery (YPR) chapter, which will be hosted at the soon-to-open BrewGrounds Café in Toms River.
This milestone initiative provides a vital support system for individuals of all age facing substance use and mental health challenges—an age group often underrepresented in traditional recovery services.
Opening on May 5, BrewGrounds—which stands for Building Recovery, Empowering Wellness—will function as a welcoming community café and recovery hub. While YPR is specifically tailored to support younger individuals, BrewGrounds itself is an inclusive space that will offer a diverse range of support groups, meetings, and events open to individuals of all ages and recovery pathways.
By moving beyond clinical settings, this innovative model fosters healing through community, connection, and empowerment—offering a new vision for recovery support in New Jersey.

Youth Recovery: Filling a Critical Gap
Young adults face unique challenges in recovery that often go unaddressed in conventional treatment models. Social pressures, identity development, educational disruptions, and the biological vulnerability of developing brains create distinct obstacles for youth experiencing substance use disorders and mental health challenges.
“Young people navigating recovery often face unique challenges, including stigma, isolation, and a lack of resources tailored to their age group,” note the café’s organizers, according to promotional materials. By bringing YPR into the café environment, BrewGrounds offers a place where younger individuals can connect with peers who truly understand their experiences.
The national YPR organization has demonstrated success in engaging youth through community-based events, volunteer opportunities, and peer leadership development. These approaches recognize that recovery for younger individuals must address not just substance use but also life skills, education, employment, and social connection—all areas where traditional treatment programs may fall short.

Coffee Shop Culture Meets Recovery Support
BrewGrounds’ innovative model leverages coffee shop culture—already popular among younger demographics—to normalize recovery as part of community life. Rather than requiring young people to seek help in clinical settings that may feel intimidating or stigmatizing, the café creates a familiar, comfortable entry point to recovery resources.
The establishment will feature a weekly calendar of recovery meetings, wellness workshops, and social events specifically designed for youth and young adults. These offerings acknowledge that younger individuals in recovery benefit from age-appropriate approaches that respect their autonomy while providing the structured support necessary for healing.
Perhaps most importantly, the café environment creates opportunities for natural mentorship and peer connection. Young people can gather in a space where recovery is the norm rather than the exception, reducing the isolation that often complicates healing, particularly for youth who may feel alienated from peers engaging in substance use.

Community-Based Model Shows Promise
Research increasingly supports community-based recovery models like BrewGrounds as effective complements to clinical treatment. These approaches recognize that while professional intervention remains essential, long-term recovery depends heavily on social factors including belonging, purpose, and connection.
By focusing specifically on youth, BrewGrounds addresses a demographic that has seen troubling increases in substance use disorders and mental health challenges. According to data from the New Jersey Department of Human Services, young adults represent a growing percentage of those seeking treatment for substance use disorders, yet they often report feeling out of place in recovery settings dominated by older individuals with different life experiences.
The café’s unique approach also acknowledges the interconnected nature of substance use and mental health challenges among younger populations. Rather than treating these as separate issues, BrewGrounds creates space for conversations about overall wellness, recognizing that recovery encompasses multiple dimensions of health and functioning.
The May 5 grand opening event, titled “Espresso Yourself: Brewing Change, Breaking Down Stigma,” will showcase the café’s youth-focused programming while connecting attendees with resources from across the community. A provider resource fair will allow young people and their families to explore available support services in a non-clinical, pressure-free environment.
As New Jersey’s first Recovery Network Café, BrewGrounds represents an innovative addition to the state’s recovery infrastructure. If successful, this model could potentially expand to other communities, creating a network of youth-centered recovery spaces that complement existing treatment approaches while addressing the unique needs of younger individuals.
Located at 954 NJ-166 in Toms River, BrewGrounds Café opens its doors on Monday, May 5, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with organizers emphasizing that while the space specifically supports youth recovery, it welcomes anyone interested in mental health, recovery, and community wellness, regardless of age or personal experience with substance use.
