Suspect in Newark Drive-By Shooting Ring Arrested
A Newark man faces multiple charges including attempted murder following his arrest for allegedly participating in a series of drive-by shootings that have terrorized city neighborhoods since January. The suspect, identified as Darryl Johnson, 24, was apprehended Wednesday following a coordinated effort between the Newark Police Department, Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, and federal authorities.
Police recovered three illegal firearms during the arrest, including a modified automatic weapon allegedly used in at least two of the shootings, according to investigators who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing investigation.

Pattern of Targeted Violence Emerged Over Several Months
“Our investigators quickly figured out that it was one person committing these acts and coordinated efforts with neighboring jurisdictions to stop them,” said Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé in a statement released Thursday morning. “This arrest represents a significant step toward making our streets safer for Newark residents.”
According to police reports, Johnson is suspected of involvement in at least six drive-by shootings between January and April 2025, primarily targeting locations in Newark’s West Ward. At least three people were wounded in these incidents, though none fatally.
Court documents reveal that the investigation accelerated after surveillance footage captured a silver Honda with distinctive damage at multiple shooting scenes. The vehicle, reported stolen from Jersey City in February, was recovered abandoned in East Orange last week following a high-speed pursuit.
Technology and Community Tips Proved Crucial to Investigation
Investigators credit advanced ballistic analysis conducted by the State Police Forensic Laboratory with linking shell casings from multiple crime scenes. This evidence, combined with surveillance footage and cellular data, helped authorities develop a comprehensive case.
“This arrest comes after months of dedicated investigation, including countless hours of video review and forensic analysis,” said Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens. “The collaboration between local, county, and federal agencies exemplifies how we can effectively combat violent crime in our communities.”
Community involvement played a crucial role, with Newark’s anonymous tip line receiving several reports about suspicious activity at the location where Johnson was ultimately arrested. Mayor Ras Baraka highlighted this cooperation in comments to reporters Thursday.
“When community members feel empowered to share information without fear, we can make tremendous progress against violent crime,” Baraka said. “Today’s arrest demonstrates what happens when law enforcement and residents work together toward the common goal of safety.”

Authorities Believe More Suspects Remain at Large
While Johnson’s arrest marks a significant breakthrough, investigators believe at least two other individuals participated in the shooting spree and remain at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Newark Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit.
“We will continue working diligently until everyone involved in these dangerous acts is brought to justice,” Fragé emphasized. “There is absolutely no tolerance for this kind of violence in our city.”
Johnson faces multiple charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault, illegal weapons possession, and receiving stolen property. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 40 years in prison.
The suspect is being held at Essex County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing scheduled for next Tuesday. Court records do not yet indicate whether Johnson has retained an attorney.
