Westfield School Board Selects Leadership Team

The Westfield Board of Education has chosen its leadership for the 2025-26 school year, with Robert Benacchio returning as Board President and Kristen Sonnek-Schmelz stepping into the Vice President role following Tuesday night’s reorganization meeting.

The board’s leadership elections came after Benacchio, Sonnek-Schmelz and Mary Wickens were sworn in to serve new terms following their victories in April’s school board election, according to Patch. All three incumbents successfully defended their seats against challenger Violetta Watson.

Unanimous Support for Leadership Team

Board member Leila Morrelli nominated Benacchio to continue as President, highlighting his comprehensive experience across all board committees and his previous service as both Vice President and President. The nomination emphasized Benacchio’s commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement.

“His governance has been organized as well as compassionate, and it is clear that he values all stakeholders and considers all perspectives,” Morrelli stated during the nomination. Both Benacchio and Sonnek-Schmelz received unanimous approval from their colleagues for their respective leadership positions.

Experience and Vision Drive Selection

Benacchio’s return to the presidency comes as the district faces significant initiatives, including implementing recently approved referendum projects and continuing curriculum enhancements. His three years of board experience—including time co-chairing both finance and curriculum committees—were cited as valuable assets.

For her part, Sonnek-Schmelz was nominated by board member Sonal Patel, who praised her “exceptional leadership, dedication, and insight” demonstrated during her three years of service. Patel emphasized Sonnek-Schmelz’s collaborative approach and commitment to student welfare as key qualifications for the vice presidency.

Continuity in Leadership

The selection of experienced board members for leadership positions signals a desire for continuity as the district navigates ongoing projects and educational initiatives. The board has maintained stable leadership despite facing various challenges over the past year, including budget constraints and facility improvements.

“We have a lot to get done. We have referendum projects to get moving on. We have curriculum to continue to improve. And we have a district to continue to be proud of,” Benacchio remarked after his selection, according to district communications. “I couldn’t think of eight better people to do it with.”

Looking Ahead

The newly sworn-in board members begin their terms as Westfield Public Schools prepare for the summer break and planning for the upcoming academic year. Key priorities identified for the 2025-26 school year include implementing capital improvements approved in recent referendums and enhancing educational programming.

Superintendent Dr. Raymond González expressed confidence in the board’s leadership selections, noting, “The continuity in board leadership will be invaluable as we implement our strategic initiatives and continue building on Westfield’s tradition of educational excellence,” according to local reports.
