Whoopi Goldberg Plans Major Film Studio in Newark
Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka announced Friday that the city is in active discussions with legendary entertainer Whoopi Goldberg to establish a major Hollywood-style studio in New Jersey’s largest city, potentially transforming Newark into a premier East Coast hub for film and television production.
The proposed development would bring together Goldberg’s production company, Whoopi Inc., and The MBS Group, the world’s largest studio services and production infrastructure company, to create a facility that promises to generate jobs, affordable housing, and economic revitalization.

Cultural Renaissance for Newark
Mayor Baraka framed the potential development as part of his broader vision to reconnect Newark with its early history in film production. “This development with MBS expands my consistent efforts to bring Newark full circle to its early days as the world’s film capital,” said Baraka in a press release published by Insider NJ.
The mayor emphasized that Newark already provides the necessary elements for large-scale production, including diverse locations and local talent. This project would build upon previous investments in Newark’s cultural sector, including the establishment of an Office of Film and Television and the under-construction Lionsgate Newark Studios.
Economic and Housing Benefits
Beyond its cultural impact, the proposed studio would deliver tangible economic benefits to Newark residents. The development is expected to include affordable housing components alongside the production facilities, addressing one of the city’s most pressing needs, according to Patch.
“Mayor Baraka has been a visionary with sourcing creative ways to help increase housing options while continually enhancing our artistic community,” said Office of Film & TV Director DesireĂ© Hadley. “Whoopi Goldberg and MBS Studios couldn’t have picked a better place to develop film/TV studios, joined with affordable housing.”
Industry Experience and Community Investment
The MBS Group brings significant industry experience to the project, operating more than 50 studio campuses across eight countries and servicing over 600 sound stages that support more than 900 productions annually, according to multiple sources.
Jason Hairston, Chief Studio & Real Estate Officer for MBS, emphasized the company’s commitment to local investment through its “Changing Lenses” initiative. “We actively invest in training, mentorship, and job creation—particularly for historically underrepresented communities,” Hairston explained in comments reported by NJBIZ.

Timeline and Next Steps
While specifics about the size, cost, and exact location of the proposed studio have not yet been disclosed, negotiations are reportedly progressing well. City officials indicated that a formal announcement with detailed plans is expected in the coming months.
J. Wayman Henry, a partner with Goldberg on the project and the former Chairman of Economic Development in West Orange, expressed confidence in Newark as the ideal location. “It’s New Jersey’s largest city, centrally located in the tri-state area, and backed by visionary leadership committed to inclusive economic development,” Henry stated.
